Mayer Brown JSM has added a partner in Shanghai and a consultant in Beijing.

New partner Betty Tam is joining Mayer Brown’s Shanghai office from Herbert Smith Freehills, where she was also a partner. She focuses on foreign direct investment matters. In 2011, she advised French chemical producer Arkema on its acquisition of two Chinese companies for $365 million.

Tam joined the former Herbert Smith in 2001 as an associate. Prior to that, she briefly worked as a lawyer for the Hong Kong Department of Justice.

Incoming Beijing consultant Guoqing Li was previously a partner with Chinese law firm Jingtian & Gongcheng, where he focused on capital markets transactions, particularly initial public offerings.

Li first joined Jingtian & Gongcheng as an associate in 2004 but left a year later to join the Beijing office of the firm now known as Hogan Lovells. He re-joined Jingtian & Gongcheng as a partner in 2011.
