The American Lawyer Litigation Contest has a new practice mix this year—with securities and antitrust replacing employment and products liability—and that gives our Power Rankings a new look. New York firms like securities winner Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and antitrust winner Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett are climbing. Employment stalwarts like Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker are starting to lose ground. IP powerhouses like Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, which has made the finals in that category 5 of 6 times, are still doing fine. And so are the all-arounders—notably Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and O’Melveny & Myers, which have at least made the General Litigation finals in three straight contests. Alas, there’s no draft lottery for firms that wish to dethrone them. Only the long, hard slog of winning cases, and telling us about it when they do. —Michael D. Goldhaber.
