Silicon Valley firm Cooley has filed an application with the Ministry of Justice of the People’s Republic of China to open its first international office, in Shanghai. The office will focus on venture capital, life sciences, information technology, clean energy, commercial law, intellectual property and securities litigation.

“With many of our clients pursuing aggressive growth plans in China, an increase in venture fund formation and investing activity focused on the country, and with the strong growth prospects for China and Chinese businesses, we feel that our presence in China is a natural first step in our international expansion,” Joe Conroy, Cooley’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.
