Dozens of law firms have now rallied to raise associate salaries. But the cohort of Big Law that’s publicly announced the $10,000 to $20,000 pay bumps in 2024 remains a fairly limited club in the legal industry—most of them have profits per equity partner above $2 million a year and more than a billion dollars in gross revenue, according to an American Lawyer analysis.

There are some exceptions, of course, including a handful of boutiques and a few law firms in the Second Hundred that have matched the latest salary scale. But, while some industry observers are concerned about the long-term costs of raising pay, others say it’s pretty doable, especially for many of those firms that have already announced it.
