A legal recruiter’s recently revived post on who Big Law firms “avoid” hiring sparked outrage among some people in the legal community this week. But it also raises questions about how common those views are among law firm leaders and recruiters, and why it could be problematic.

Harrison Barnes, managing director of legal recruiting firm BCG Attorney Search, was linked to the article titled “23 Types of Attorneys Prestigious Law Firms Avoid Hiring,” which made its way through social media this week. The post had accompanying infographics, including one that looked like a bingo card, which suggested that Big Law firms avoid hiring from certain groups, such as lawyers who went to “third or fourth tier” law schools, lawyers who had moved jobs, “old” lawyers, lawyers who came from government or lawyers who don’t focus entirely on money.
