With a controversial New Jersey Tax Court decision left standing in the wake of a failed attempt at legislative intervention, lawyers are split on whether the state could be in for a wave of litigation over the tax-exempt status of nonprofit hospitals.

Among the dozens of bills that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie pocket vetoed Jan. 19, one was a piece of legislation that would have charged the state’s nonprofit hospitals a fee in lieu of taxes to help pay for local services.
