The former chief security officer of Uber Technologies Inc. faces criminal charges for reportedly attempting to conceal and mislead the Federal Trade Commision about a data breach against the ride-hailing company.

Joseph Sullivan was charged with felony obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Thursday. Federal prosecutors contend that Sullivan did not report a 2016 hack that compromised the personally identifiable information of about 57 million Uber users and drivers, while the company was already in the midst of FTC inquiries over a 2014 breach.
