Transocean Wins Indemnification from BP for Gulf Oil Spill - Could Halliburton Be Next?

BP plc suffered a big blow on Thursday when a federal judge said it owed indemnification to Transocean for any compensatory damages that might arise from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill two years ago. Will BP now suffer the same fate with the other rig-operator at the center of the disaster, Halliburton?

Judge Certifies Class in Halliburton Shareholder Suit with Boies as Lead Counsel

After a decade of litigation and a trip to the U.S. Supreme Court, Halliburton shareholders won class certification on Friday in a suit that accuses the company of falsifying its financial results and misleading investors about its asbestos liabilities. The decision by Dallas federal district court judge Barbara came seven months after the plaintiffs and their lawyer, David Boies of Boies Schiller & Flexner, won a 9-0 ruling at the Supreme Court.

Ford Wins Reversal of $56 Million Patent Infringement Verdict for Lighted Side-View Mirrors

Ford Motor Company and its attorneys at Sidley and Winston & Strawn scored a huge victory on Friday as a unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit threw out a $56 million patent infringement verdict against the car giant over lighted side-view mirrors. The estate of inventor Jacob Krippelz, represented by Bartlit Beck, was unable to convince the court that the patent wasn't invalid because of prior art.

Honeywell Fails Again to Knock Out Government's Suit over Allegedly Defective Body Armor

Honeywell has thrown up a bevy of defenses against a government suit that alleges the company made defective fabric for body armor. On Wednesday a key defense fell flat, as a judge ruled that Honeywell couldn?t block the action by claiming that the government previously turned a blind eye to potential problems with the fabric. The ruling is the latest setback for the company and its lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis.
