The news that former attorney general Michael Mukasey opted to join Debevoise & Plimpton came as a bit of surprise to the Litigation Daily. We had heard that it was all but a done deal that he would rejoin his old firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler. In an interview with The Am Law Daily, Mukasey noted Debevoise's strength in litigation and corporate investigations but declined to elaborate on his other options.Mukasey also singled out Debevoise partner and former Manhattan U.S. attorney Mary Jo White as a key player in his recruitment. "While Mary Jo was U.S. Attorney, we had occasion to deal with one another quite a bit," Mukasey said.
Mukasey isn't the only lawyer starting a new life at a private firm following a stint of public service. On Tuesday the New York Law Journal reported that former New York State chief judge Judith Kaye would be joining Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. We also received news that New York State Supreme Court justice Herman Cahn is heading to Milberg.
