Kirkpatrick Lockhart, Preston Gates to Merge

Pittsburgh-based Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham and Seattle's Preston Gates & Ellis voted on Thursday to merge. Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis -- which will be branded as K&L Gates -- will consist of 1,400 lawyers in 21 offices. The merger makes sense, says Kirkpatrick Chairman Peter Kalis, because Kirkpatrick & Lockhart is predominantly an East Coast firm looking east toward Europe while Preston Gates is predominantly a West Coast firm looking west toward Asia.
