President Barack Obama has decided to nominate Susan Carney, who spent two decades as a Washington lawyer before going to work for Yale University, to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the White House said Thursday.
Carney will be Obama's fifth nominee for the 2nd Circuit, which has emerged as a top priority for the Obama administration after a rash of vacancies.
Beginning in 1979, she worked at three Washington law firms: Rogovin, Huge & Lenzner, as an associate and partner; Tuttle & Taylor, as a partner; and Bredhoff & Kaiser, where she was of counsel. From 1996 to 1998, she was associate general counsel of the Peace Corps, according to her White House biography.
Carney joined Yale's general counsel's office in 1998. She has been deputy general counsel since 2001, working on issues including intellectual property and health care. She was acting general counsel during the second half of 2008.
In a news release, Obama said Carney "has performed with excellence and unwavering integrity" throughout her career.
