Disbarred lawyer Scott Rothstein appeared in a packed Florida federal courtroom Tuesday and was accused by prosecutors of using forged judicial signatures to defraud investors as part of a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme. John V. Gillies, special agent in charge of the Miami FBI office, called Rothstein's crime "arguably the largest fraud in Miami's history." By statute, a conviction on all the racketeering conspiracy, fraud and money laundering charges faced by Rothstein could mean a 100-year prison sentence.
