About 12 years ago, an internal memo from Best Best & Krieger expressed concerns that it was acting as a conduit for legally questionable payments from Milberg Weiss to Seymour Lazar, the lead plaintiff in dozens of securities class actions. "To us it just smells bad, and probably would to an investigator," says the memo, filed in court last week. That concern came to fruition when Lazar and his attorney, Paul Selzer, were indicted for allegedly taking some $2 million in kickbacks from Milberg Weiss.
