An appellate victory backfired Wednesday when a federal jury awarded $30 million in punitive damages in the retrial of a case where the first jury had awarded just $1.3 million. CGB Occupational Therapy claimed that Sunrise Assisted Living had induced two nursing homes to terminate CGB and hire away five of its therapists. In the retrial, CGB's attorney urged the jury to hit Sunrise hard and "deter other billion-dollar companies from trying to crush the little guy simply because they can."
