Law firm partners are racing to counsel clients—many of whom never anticipated a full-throttled response to climate regulation—as California’s new climate bills appear to be just weeks away from being signed into law.

The legislation, SB 253 and SB 261, was passed by the California Legislature as part of the state’s Climate Accountability Package on Sept. 12. It’s estimated they’ll impact more than 15,000 public and private companies combined, according to sustainability advocacy nonprofit Ceres. And California Gov. Gavin Newsom has indicated in public statements that he’ll sign the landmark measures, which have a deadline of Oct. 14.
