The firms that supplied this information-including some firms that are not in the NLJ 250-are listed below in alphabetical order. We also asked firms to provide average and median billing rates; several firms provided this information as well.

Lawyers like to lament the passing of their fabled past, when partners knew each other on sight, firms contented themselves to operating in one ZIP code and junior associates were not a menacing anonymous horde threatening to take out their frustrations via the blogosphere. As it happens, in the big-firm world those days aren't gone, they've just moved to the Am Law Second Hundred ranks, where firms are prosperous and growing steadily but retain the possibility of old-fashioned cohesion.

U.K.-U.S. Faceoff on Patent

In late February, a patent for an Internet-based customer referral system issued to Amazon.com. Not long afterward, a British company sent out a press release claiming to have put similar technology in place several years before Amazon filed for a patent. The technology allows other Web sites to refer customers to Amazon in exchange for a fee paid by the bookseller. But British company EarthPort.com claims to have developed its program in 1995 for an online lottery benefiting the International Red Cross.
