The civil liberties attorney who argued a landmark case that implemented the 2015 Hurrell-Harring settlement is now pushing New York lawmakers for a “modest” 3% cost of living increase for public defense lawyers for the indigent throughout the Empire State.

The settlement guarantees counsel for indigent criminal defendants in five New York counties— although the state has committed to implementation throughout all of New York. For the past three years that state funding has remained consistent at $250 million.
