Canada’s biggest intellectual property law boutique, Smart & Biggar, is getting even bigger through a merger with Ridout & Maybee, another Canadian IP firm.

The two firms, both with a history dating back to the 1890s, will combine under the Smart & Biggar brand, which since a year ago has been part of the Australian publicly traded patent and trademark group IPH Ltd. Their deal is expected to be completed by Sept. 29.
