Four years into his service in the Judge Advocate Generals Corp of the U.S. Army Reserves, South Florida attorney Matthew Wildner learned his unit was deploying to Afghanistan.

His military service until that point had been confined to a base in Orlando. Then, in January 2016, he found himself at Bagram Air Base, once the largest U.S. military bases in Afghanistan.
