In 2018, the U.S. Farm Bill took CBD, a non-psychoactive compound of cannabis, out of the definition of a controlled substance. Since then, the CBD industry, despite questions from the Food and Drug Administration, has been thriving, and e-commerce companies are jumping in.

Square Inc. announced this month it would offer CBD sellers payment processing services. Through email, Sivan Whiteley, the general counsel of Square, discussed what led to the company’s decision and the challenges that go along with it.
