While merger negotiations with Nixon Peabody and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman were active, leaders of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan had backup plans to relocate portions of the firm in case a combination didn’t pan out, according to sources familiar with the matter.

After the firm’s plan A of merging with another firm fell through, its plan B of dissolving the firm and relocating a portion of the firm is playing out this week as more than half of Stroock’s existing partnership is transitioning to Hogan Lovells, including real estate lawyers, litigators and corporate dealmakers based in New York, Washington, D.C., Miami and Los Angeles. The group includes co-managing partner Jeff Keitelman.
