Jones Day and Weil, Gotshal & Manges joined the list of firms paying California first-years $160,000 rather than the $145,000 embraced by most homegrown firms. But homegrown firms probably aren’t facing a run on talent.

“The way I see it is that I just turned 29, and I am making $190,000 base plus bonus,” said James Han, a fourth-year associate at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker. “How many 29-year-olds make that much money? There isn’t any reason to complain.”
