Japanese banking giant Nomura has completed an overhaul of its in-house legal team following last year's takeover of Lehman Brothers' European and Middle Eastern equities and investment banking businesses. The combined legal department is to be overseen by European general counsels Mark Chapman and Piers Le Marchant, who was previously managing director of legal at Lehman.

Davis Polk to close Frankfurt office as local chief steps down

Davis Polk & Wardwell has opted to close its Frankfurt office when resident partner Patrick Kenadjian retires at the end of August, reports The Am Law Daily. Kenadjian informed the firm earlier this spring that he intended to retire at the end of this year. In the meantime, the office's designated successor, London-based partner Harald Halbhuber, decided to leave the firm for personal reasons, according to managing partner John Ettinger. The Frankfurt office, which was launched in 1991, has long focused on cross-border securities and M&A work. In January, Kenadjian headed a team advising Oesterreichische Kontrollbank on its offering of $1.25bn (£770m) in global notes.

BPP Law School backs £300m takeover by US bidder

The parent company of top UK law school BPP has accepted a £303.5m takeover offer from a US education provider in a move that will be closely watched by the legal profession. BPP Holdings today (8 June) made an announcement on the London Stock Exchange that the all-cash offer by Apollo Global worth 620p per share - a premium on Friday's closing price of 567p - had been agreed by the board of BPP, subject to a shareholder vote.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is to keep on all six of its September 2009 qualifying trainees in the City while Shearman & Sterling has offered jobs to nearly two thirds of its qualifiers. Cleary has continued its record of retaining every qualifying trainee since it introduced its trainee programme in the City in 1997.
