Charles Russell hires employment partner from Pinsents

Charles Russell has bulked up its employment and pensions team with the hire of Pinsent Masons employment partner Robert Mecrate-Butcher. Mecrate-Butcher, who joined Pinsents in 2007, works across both contentious and non-contentious employment law, with a particular focus on advising clients in the insurance and banking sectors. He specialises in TUPE advice, with his practice also 
covering diversity and equality issues, executive departures and the enforcement of restrictive covenants. The hire takes the combined employment and pensions group to 11 partners.

Withers has launched a tax litigation practice in London with the hire of Irwin Mitchell's business and tax investigations head Maurice Martin. Martin joined the firm on 
1 December after five years at Irwin Mitchell, four of which he spent as practice head. He will lead the tax litigation team at Withers, which will sit within the firm's wealth planning group. The firm is planning to add a team of junior lawyers to the group over the coming months.

BLP boosts finance group with Ashurst partner hire

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has strengthened its finance practice with the hire of Simon Small from Ashurst, 
who will join the firm towards the end of this year. Small, who joined Ashurst from Linklaters in 2006, will be part of BLP's banking & capital markets group. He has experience in capital markets transactions across a range of asset classes including residential mortgages, trade receivables, auto loans, credit cards, commercial real estate and project bonds. He also advises on corporate trusts. His departure takes the number of partners to leave Ashurst since May 2010 to 26. At Linklaters, Small was a partner for 11 years and was one of the partners to found the magic circle firm's securitisation business.
