Founded in 2009, Square Inc. has changed the way small businesses operate. Early in the company’s history, it provided the Square card reader, a small device that plugged into mobile phones and tablets that could read credit cards to process sales. The company has released new types of readers, including one that can process payments from chip-cards, and it has added a few services such as its financing program, Square Capital, and its person-to-person payments system, Square Cash. Square was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter Inc. The two companies are located a block away from each other in San Francisco.
