Katie Biber’s career turned a few years ago from politics to tech. Now the general counsel at San Francisco-based Thumbtack Inc., which connects customers with freelance professionals ranging from personal trainers to piano teachers, Biber previously worked on five presidential campaigns and served as general counsel for Romney for President. She comes to Thumbtack from Airbnb Inc., where she learned what it means to be a tech lawyer under the guidance of Belinda Johnson, whom Airbnb promoted last year from general counsel to chief business affairs and legal officer. Biber recently sat down with The Recorder to discuss what she’s learned on the job and the intersection of tech and policy.

Why did you decide to come into tech, rather than other industries, when leaving politics behind?
