SAN FRANCISCO — Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton has swiped an IP litigation partner from Alston & Bird.

Sean DeBruine, who joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office earlier this month, represents technology companies in patent, copyright and trade secret cases. He said Kilpatrick Townsend’s reputation and technical IP expertise impressed him.

For any branch of technology, “there seems to be a lawyer here in the Bay Area, if not elsewhere in the firm, that was actually a prominent practitioner in that industry before becoming a lawyer,” the Cupertino native said. “I’m currently working on a case involving lasers and was told yesterday, ‘If you need help, we’ve got five or six people with a background in physics and electronics.’”

DeBruine was the managing partner of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld’s Silicon Valley office before joining Alston & Bird. He worked with legal recruiter Martha Angell of Palo Alto-based Mlegal Consulting to make his move.

Susan Spaeth, Kilpatrick Townsend’s managing partner, touted DeBruine’s Bay Area roots, saying in a statement: “His experience and strong ties to the Silicon Valley community will greatly benefit the firm and our clients.”
