Snapchat Inc., the fleeting-photo messaging service, has snapped up its first general counsel from Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C. Formerly a litigator in the firm’s appellate practice, Christopher Handman joined the Venice Beach-based startup Thursday. See story online.

Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo has added Terri Shieh-Newton to its intellectual property practice in the San Francisco office. Shieh-Newton was the cochairwoman of the stem cell and regenerative medicine practice at Morrison & Foerster. See story online.

Duane Morris has appointed Stephen Sutro managing partner of its San Francisco office. He succeeds partner Joseph Burton, who served in that role since 2001. See story online.

Elizabeth Hughes Eginton will join Latham & Watkins as chief marketing officer, effective June 2. Eginton served as chief marketing officer of Morgan Stanley and, previously, she was a partner at McKinsey & Company.

Loeb & Loeb has appointed Los Angeles-based partner Rachel Harris as chairwoman of the firm’s international trusts and estates planning practice. She is admitted to practice in California, New York and England and Wales.

Dentons has added David Blood to its corporate practice as a partner in the Los Angeles office. He joined from Latham & Watkins, where he represented clients in corporate transactions involving media, sports, technology and intellectual property assets.

Hamid Namazie has joined McGuireWoods in Los Angeles as a partner in the debt finance department, where he will focus on advising clients on all facets of secured and unsecured lending transactions in both the large corporate and middle markets. Previously, he was a shareholder and administrative chairman of Buchalter Nemer’s bank and finance practice in Los Angeles.

Jeffrey Koewler, Dan Coyle, John O’Malley, Jennifer Madden and Chris Delfino have left Downey Brand to launch Delfino Madden O’Malley Coyle & Koewler, a firm focused on corporate, business, employment and family law, in Sacramento. Joining Delfino Madden’s five partners are four lawyers, Corinne Gartner, Monica Hans, Shaye Schrick and Caroline Colangelo, and five additional staff.
