A Bay Area team from Latham & Watkins was at the heart of Thoratec Corp.'s acquisition of a ventricular assist system from Japan's Terumo Corp., which closed Monday. Headquartered in Pleasanton, Thoratec is a market leader in providing products to treat patients with advanced-stage heart failure. It's adding Terumo's DuraHeart II system to its portfolio in exchange for an upfront cash payment of $13 million and potential future milestone payments of up to $43.5 million.

Latham's deal team included Silicon Valley corporate partner Tad Freese and associates Chad Rolston and W. Riley Lochridge; San Francisco partner Hanno Kaiser, who advised on antitrust matters; and Silicon Valley partner Judith Hasko and associate Kate Hillier, who provided IP counsel. Freese was not immediately available for comment.
