WASHINGTON — Acting associate attorney general Tony West defended the U.S. Department of Justice’s record with whistleblowers Thursday, testifying on Capitol Hill that his leadership led to the recovery of more taxpayer money than at any other time in American history.

"The fact is that whistleblowers have a friend in this Justice Department," West, nominated for third-in-command at DOJ, said at his confirmation hearing. The government, West said, recovered more than $11 billion taxpayer funds recovered during his 3 1/2 years as the chief of the Civil Division.
