I recall sitting in the office of a senior partner as he gave me — a freshly-minted associate at the time — an assignment to write a motion to dismiss. The legal theories made my head spin. I nodded and took notes while wondering how I could figure out the arguments, let alone draft the motion. A few dozen assignments later, I marveled at how obtuse I had been. The task that had once given me palpitations, I could later handle without breaking a sweat.

There is only one way to master the art of motion writing. Write and argue as many motions as you can. With practice, logical structure and persuasive writing comes more naturally.
