Social media policies are ever changing and employers need to stay well-informed of the changes. On Sept. 27, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1844 and California joined Maryland and Illinois as the third state to limit an employer’s ability to request an employee’s social media passwords.

The use of technology for personal and business purposes exploded in recent years, and with the explosion comes challenges for employers and employees. The use of social media communication using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace is now a phenomenon for people of all ages. Information, once broadcast by word or written media, is now instantly broadcast worldwide, unfortunately, to the detriment of some employers and employees.
