SAN FRANCISCO — California’s new chief justice kicked off her first oral arguments at the Supreme Court today with a privacy rights case that deals with whether retailers can record customers’ ZIP codes to track down their addresses.

At the outset, Justice Joyce Kennard welcomed Cantil-Sakauye to the court, noting that her grandparents emigrated from the Philippines and that her parents were farm laborers. “Today, their daughter is at the helm of California’s vast judicial branch,” Kennard said. “She is living proof that the American dream is not dead.”
