SACRAMENTO — Some time in the late morning of July 14, after he stunned his Supreme Court colleagues by announcing that he would retire, Chief Justice Ronald George broke the news to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger by telephone.
The conversation, according to George, eventually shifted to his replacement.
