SAN FRANCISCO — For the first time in President Obama’s tenure, a Republican appointee on the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has decided to go senior.

Judge Andrew Kleinfeld, a Ronald Reagan pick for the district court in Alaska who was elevated to the circuit by George H.W. Bush, said he will take senior status June 12 — the first day he becomes eligible.
