Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday nominated two long-tenured trial court judges to the appellate benches, one in San Francisco and the other in Orange County.

Judge Charles Smiley, who has served as a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court since 2012, was named to the First District Court of Appeal, Division One. Smiley is supervising judge of Alameda County's collaborative courts, which work with defendants dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.
