State bar leaders on Monday unveiled proposed licensing fee increases that, if approved by the Legislature, could push active lawyers’ annual bills to more than $600 starting in 2025.

During a three-hour meeting, state bar staff said the agency needs millions of dollars in additional revenue to pay for higher employee salary and health care costs, more workers—perhaps as many as 77—to handle a still-increasing backlog of complaints against lawyers, a diversion program for low-level disciplinary cases and a number of other changes, including a system for reviewing some rejected discipline cases.
