Newly introduced legislation would extend California state courts’ authority to hold criminal proceedings remotely through 2024, giving judiciary leaders, lawyers and labor groups another year to negotiate a more far-reaching deal.

With just three weeks left until the Legislature recesses for the year, talks over the divisive issue ended on Saturday without a resolution, according to one participant. A budget-related bill amended Sunday now includes language that would maintain the remote proceedings status quo in criminal courts until Jan. 1, 2025. The current statutory authority is set to expire at the end of this year.
