Of the 35 lawyers appointed to lead lawsuits over hair relaxers used predominantly by Black and Brown women, 12 are attorneys of color.

On Thursday, Judge Mary Rowland of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois approved a team led by four attorneys, including Ben Crump of Ben Crump Law in Tallahassee, Florida, and Diandra “Fu” Debrosse Zimmermann, of DiCello Levitt. Both are co-founders of Shades of Mass, an organization created last year to promote nonwhite attorneys to leadership roles in mass torts.
