Scott S. Humphreys—a litigator with wide-ranging experience handling complex commercial, products liability and intellectual property matters for clients across industries—has rejoined Ballard Spahr as a partner in the firm's Los Angeles office. Humphreys returns to Ballard Spahr after serving as chief legal officer and general counsel for a biotech startup. As a member of the firm's commercial litigation and dispute resolution group, he will litigate matters in California federal and state courts, as well as other courts across the country. Humphreys' experience includes handling a billion-dollar case in the automotive sector, a 1,000-plus-plaintiff toxic tort action, high-profile media and entertainment litigation, a trade secret case involving an aerospace rocket startup and complex franchise litigation.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
