A state bar committee on Friday pushed ahead with plans to allow non-lawyers to provide limited legal services despite pending legislation that would block such proposals.

The bar’s Closing the Justice Gap Working Group met online for the first time in two months to continue drafting plans for a so-called regulatory sandbox, which would allow tech companies and other nonlegal professionals to offer legal products and services. The chairs of the Legislature’s judiciary committees have criticized such work and in June amended the state bar’s annual licensing-fee bill to prohibit spending money on any programs that would allow nonattorneys to practice law. If AB 2958, as written, is signed into law it would take effect on Jan. 1.
