California’s state bar leaders on Friday voted to continue pursuing a paraprofessional program despite ongoing opposition from lawyers and legal aid groups.
The board of trustees endorsed recent changes to the program proposed by a committee drafting the plan that would allow a new class of licensed nonlawyers to practice in underserved areas of the law and in the state. Chief among those changes was an agreement not to allow nonlawyers to own a stake in law firms.
