California’s state bar has launched a committee that will investigate a report into disciplinary complaints against Los Angeles trial attorney Tom Girardi and recommend tighter regulations on client trust accounts.

The decision from the state bar’s Board of Trustees on July 23 follows an internal audit that found the bar “made mistakes” in pursuing complaints against Girardi—who faces allegations that he embezzled millions of dollars in client funds. Lawmakers have also called for a state auditor to review the bar’s disciplinary system in the wake of the audit.
