A lawyer for Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday pleaded with a Sacramento judge to list the governor’s Democratic party affiliation on the upcoming recall election ballot even though he missed the statutory deadline to do so.
Thomas Willis, an Olson Remcho partner representing Newsom, said at a Sacramento County Superior Court hearing that he mistakenly failed to include the governor’s party label in February 2020 when he filed a statutorily required answer to the recall petition targeting Newsom. The governor sued Secretary of State Shirley Weber last month to force her to list his party affiliation.
