Cruz Reynoso, the first Latino to serve on California’s Supreme Court, died on Friday at a residential care home in Oroville, his family said. He was 90.

Born in Brea, Reynoso was the son of migrant farm workers, and he attended segregated schools in the Central Valley as a boy. He found his way to UC Berkeley School of Law, where he graduated in 1958. A civil rights attorney who worked with Cesar Chavez and served clients ignored by other lawyers, Reynoso was named to the state Supreme Court in 1982 only to be ousted by voters four years later.
