Replacing San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera will require a public-minded attorney who won’t run the office like a political entity, according to some of Herrera’s former lieutenants.

On Monday, Mayor London Breed announced that she nominated Herrera to serve as the general manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, an agency at the center of a federal investigation into bribery allegations. If confirmed by the commission, Herrera’s successor would be not only the first new city attorney in nearly 20 years, but also would inherit a parallel local city hall corruption probe.
