Apple, a dozen states and other objectors came out in force Wednesday to defeat a proposed $87.7 million in attorney fees in a class action settlement over the throttling of older iPhones.

At a Zoom hearing Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Edward Davila of the Northern District of California, many of the objectors insisted that plaintiffs lawyers failed to justify such an award, which is 28.3% of the $310 million settlement. In fact, a lawyer for Apple insisted that he feared the prospect of an inflated fee request back in 2018, when Davila appointed 39 plaintiffs firms to lead the multidistrict litigation.
