A California appellate panel on Thursday stayed a preliminary injunction forcing Uber and Lyft to immediately recognize their drivers as employees. The stay comes with conditions, however.

In a docket order, the court said the stay will remain in place until the ride-hailing companies complete their appeals, but only if the companies agree to an expedited briefing schedule. Uber’s and Lyft’s appeals will be consolidated and their opening brief is due Sept. 4, the court said.
