San Francisco’s top federal prosecutor is defending his office’s record of opposing compassionate release in some cases brought by prisoners raising concerns about exposure to COVID-19.
“The United States respects the rights of defendants, and appreciates the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19 across our community, including to the inmate population and the facilities responsible for them,” wrote U.S. Attorney David Anderson in a Wednesday court filing. “At the same time, the United States’ primary interests are to protect the public, vindicate the rights of victims, and uphold the rule of law,” he wrote.
