Last month, Corporate Counsel, an affiliate of The Recorder, named PayPal general counsel Wanji Walcott GC of the year, and published a profile of the in-house leader.
Just a few weeks later, The Recorder’s Caroline Spiezio sat down to speak with PayPal’s other legal boss — chief legal officer and executive vice president, chief business affairs, Louise Pentland. The seasoned in-house lawyer joined PayPal in April 2015, after more than 16 years in Nokia’s legal department, where she eventually landed her first CLO title.
Pentland’s move to PayPal coincided with the company’s split from eBay, a transition she helped direct and finalize. Now, she’s responsible for the company’s corporate affairs initiatives, including moves to boost diversity and inclusion. She oversees PayPal’s regulatory compliance, communications, government relations and more.
And she gets it all done while helping to run a legal department of more than 165 employees worldwide.
In the video below, Spiezio speaks with Pentland about how she juggles many aspects of her job, the dynamics of the GC/CLO relationship and her advice for business-focused in-house leaders.
